An initiative of The Bright Side of School

Creating Safer Schools Through Education, Awareness & Action.

Save Sylvester equips schools, students, parents and educators with the tools to recognise, prevent and respond to bullying — building environments where every child feels seen, safe and supported.

Through storytelling, research and practical resources, we help communities across Nigeria replace fear with empathy and turn awareness into lasting cultural change.

The Story

Why Save Sylvester Exists

“No family should ever lose a child to bullying. Every school should be a safe haven—a place where every student feels nurtured, safe, and inspired to grow, learn, and thrive.”
— The Bright Side of School

Save Sylvester was inspired by the tragic death of Sylvester Oromoni, a young student whose loss moved a nation. His story brought urgent, painful attention to the reality of bullying in schools — and to the responsibility we all share in protecting children.

Rather than dwell on tragedy, this initiative channels that grief into purpose. We believe the most meaningful way to honour a life is to prevent harm to others — by giving schools the knowledge, language and structures they need to keep every student safe.

Save Sylvester works quietly and rigorously: educating young people about empathy and respect, equipping teachers to recognise warning signs, and helping school leaders build cultures where cruelty has no place to hide. This is prevention through understanding — steady, evidence-informed and deeply human.

Our Mission

Three values at the heart of every safe school

Save Sylvester is built on principles that transform school culture from the inside out — one classroom, one conversation, one child at a time.

Respect

We help students understand the dignity of every person — cultivating kindness, empathy and the confidence to stand up for one another.

Tolerance

Difference is not a threat. We nurture inclusive classrooms where diversity of background, ability and belief is welcomed and celebrated.

Education

Knowledge changes behaviour. Through structured learning, we give young people the tools to recognise, refuse and report harm.

The Book

A story that starts conversations children remember

At the heart of the initiative is an illustrated educational book designed for classrooms and homes alike. It gently guides young readers through the realities of bullying — and shows them, through character and story, how empathy and courage can change everything.

How It Works

Three steps to a safer school

A simple, evidence-informed process that turns lived student experience into meaningful institutional change.

  1. 1

    Schools participate

School leaders register to join the initiative and receive the Save Sylvester resources, framework and survey toolkit.

  2. 2

    Students complete the survey

Pupils anonymously share their experiences of safety, belonging and respect through a short, thoughtfully designed questionnaire.

  3. 3

    Insights improve school culture

Schools receive clear, actionable insights that help them strengthen policy, support students and measure progress over time.

School Climate Survey

Every voice counts — and every voice stays private

The School Climate Survey is the heartbeat of Save Sylvester. Because it is completely anonymous, students can answer honestly — without fear of being identified. That honesty is what gives schools a true picture of daily life, and the confidence to act on what they learn.
